The Umigi Pen is based on my patent application for a new retractable mechanism for pens. The idea came from a challenge I took upon me – To make a pen that will act like a mechanical pencil with the addition of making the tip retract too. Two years of research and development later, I have created a lightweight, convenient product for everyone.

Perhaps the best part of the innovative mechanism, is that it is simple enough to mass produce. This means that eventually the pen will be available to everyone.

In addition, since the mechanism is embedded as part of the pen's body with no moving parts at all, I will be able to provide different designs for the pen in the future. My goal with my Kickstarter Project is to raise the funds to create molds to work with the design of the pen and to start manufacturing the pen to everyone. We currently are aiming to use a smooth Shimdt refill. But we are still testing other refils and manufacturers, so it's still pending.

When I shared this pen with my friend who has difficulty writing and gripping pens due to his physical impairments, he indicated that the pen was entirely helpful to him because he could open and close it with such ease. There was no need to leverage the pen against something else to click the pen closed, and no need to attach a cap. The smile on his face was priceless and spurred my desire to develop additional molds for the pen. After having the pen experienced by other physically challenged individuals, I know that the pen is a perfect solution for them too.

The mechanism has passed the United States Patent and Tradmark Office Patent Cooperation Treaty Examination with flying colors and is now patent-pending worldwide.

The primary function or your pledge, and the reason why I am asking for help, is the creation of the molds for manufacturing. Your pledge will make everything possible. Along with the prototypes I already have, I will be able to finish development fine tunings, and show the manufacturing and retail communities that there is a market for my product. Ultimately, I hope to manufacture the pen on a grander scale.
