Use the incredible density of the W3 cube to focus your creative energy

My desk is minimal and clean. As a designer, I have always wanted to keep distractions away. The wrong color or shape on my desk could throw off my work without me even realizing it. I’ve worked this way for years quite successfully, but it always felt like something was missing.

For some reason, I have always been drawn to the idea of a cube. It’s the perfect geometric shape. Perfect lines, perfect symmetry. Recently a friend of mine was talking about his new tungsten ring. Like a flash, I saw the vision of the perfect object:

I was compelled to see if such a thing existed. It didn’t. The compulsion was so strong, I decided to contact a manufacturer and have one made. A few weeks later it was on my desk. Now, instead of the ultimate minimal desk, there was a totem. My focus point. Solid, dense, geometric perfection.

The cube serves as a creative center of gravity for me. Whenever I feel blocked, I grab it. It’s so unusual in its sharp, straight edges and so dense that my mind instantly switches gears. This is not an everyday object. When you touch and hold something so unusual, your mind can’t help thinking differently. It is the ultimate way for me to find my center and temporarily step away from normalcy.

Human beings have always craved novelty.  Something unique you have never experienced in your lifetime.  For me, that's pure density in a one inch perfect cube.
