@Travis - I agree with you on that. However, this is not a company. We are BackerClub. I believe people will feel comfortable to wear something that they are part with it.

Company T-Shirts, you pass it out for ads. So people receive it for free. Of course they will wear it most of the time in places you've mentioned. Even I myself do that.

But I don't think it will be the case if the community hopes to go it together. If they love the club, I think they will be happy to wear it anywhere. Doesn't matter as long they are happy.

Who cares where they wear it? The most important part is that they feel part of the club and happy about it.

The question is "why do promotional material"

1. So people advertise you and/or your product
2. So people feel a part of something or to build team/club spirit
3. Both 1 & 2

1. Is the reason most companies give stuff away and in my opinion they fail because there is nothing super cool about the promotional material as it just has a company and/or product name on it and few companies or their logos are so cool/fun to give the basic person a reason to want to do your advertising for free. The GitHub t-shirt my husband brought home recently is pretty cool and too small for him so guess who gets to wear it? But most t-shirts he brings home from workshops are boring - company name/logo/product.

2. If the goal is to make members feel part of something where they wear the t-shirt, as pointed out by kenthien, doesn't matter. The group can run contest for strangest place t-shirt is worn, most crowded space, with the most Kickstarter loot, etc. to build club spirit if they want but just the t-shirt lets members know they belong. A good graphic or phrase/quote as a conversation starter never hurts.

3. This is what most people think they are doing when they give free swag out. As I mentioned in #1 you need a really cool graphic and/or be a company everyone's talking about (hopefully for a good reason). Swag doesn't automatically buy team/club spirit - you can't convert customers to sales staff by giving them a t-shirt - a really good product converts. Team/club members tend to wear t-shirts because they already belong and love excuses to talk about their thing.

@Tasha. Totally agree with you and really pointed out all the things in detail. As always, you've provided valuable insights most of the time and really appreciate it.

I'd be interested in tshirts, as previously stated at least for the members, this is a club. Using Zazzle or CafePress would eliminate the need to stock on hand and those that were interested could get what they want.

I do whimsical/abstract art and am always on the look out to get my name out there, so I might be willing to create something, if you like my style...

You can check my past Kickstarter projects and profile for examples of my work.

I've been enjoying projects with BC perks which include logo stuff. I've received a glass pendant from one project. From the Carbasini project the BC perk allowed me to request the BC logo.

It's too bad the Nature t-shirt project isn't including a BC t-shirt option.

It would be fairly easy for a Zazzle store to be set-up - shirts, mugs, magnets/pins - another source of income for Mark & Billy - rewards they could give out - backers could buy logo merchandise if they want it - cost nothing but time to set up (they could offer a BC member BackerBucks to help set up the store - do the merchandise part). I find Zazzle much easier to use than CafePress as a creator.
