Question on justifying Funding

Hey all!

Our project is Slrp - reinventing the bowl and making food more fun.

(https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sk ... -more-fun/)

Our funding goal is $70k. My fear is that many folks are looking at this saying "$70k for a bowl? They're just trying to make a buck."

Which isn't the case. Molds are at least $30k of that. Materials, production, and fulfillment make up the rest.

Three questions:
1. Is this a valid fear?
2. If so, would it be good to address this?
3. If yes, Video, Words, both? How far into the story?

Thanks a bunch!
Peter

I don't think experienced backers will begrudge you your funding, as long as it's explained adequately in the project materials.

The one thing I would suggest you do is look at comparable projects and see how they approached things. Casual backers may pass you by if your price is too high. See if there appears to be a 'ceiling' on products of your type - i.e. the last successful bowl only sold at $7 / unit when you're asking $10 / unit, then you'll need to work on explaining. Ditto if your manufacturing approach is different than others - I have no idea if 30k for molds is reasonable and customary for specialty designed bowls.

In any event, what you really need to do is prove/explain your value proposition.

$10 for a bowl that keeps a kid entertained/engaged for breakfast? I'm sold, but I don't have kids of that age now, but back in the day I would have considered that a bargain for peace during mealtime.

The only other thing I'd suggest is a video of a whole group of kids, like a whole kindergarten class or birthday party, using your product at once. That might reinforce it's universal appeal better than onesies-twosies shots.

Hey Tom,

Thanks a bunch for that. We'll take your suggestion to ensure the value proposition is clear! We're working on some updated graphics now.

Thanks!
Peter

I'm in a similar boat. My product requires 7 molds. Ranging from 22" x 10" down to 3" x 2".

I've had to go overseas to price molds and I have it down to $60,000 for all 7. The way it's heading , Ill have to have a $200,000 goal to cover the molds, packaging, shipping and manufacturing.

We're leaning towards making a pie chart explaining where all the funds will be spent.

Pie chart is a great idea. Good luck with your project!

I see you did not get funded. Will you be launching again? What would you be doing different?
