Compulsive buyer

I am a compulsive buyer. With almost 400 projects backed (about 25% have failed or been cancelled), Kickstarter is bad for my wallet. I am trying to cut back, and/or make lower pledges. It would be great to be able to pledge some really high level pledges, but I just can't justify it, too much stuff already.

My first KS project backed was Two Kinds Webcomic Back in May 2012.

I have added a number of board games to my collection, although most of the ones I already have are really old (3M bookshelf games, anyone?)

I was referred here by Target Acquired, which is one of the endorsed projects on the front page.

OK, I am done rambling, see you over on KS.

Good to see another addict... I'm also trying to cut back on amount/number of projects. I'm afraid I may be better at enabling other addicts/compulsive backers than cutting back myself :o

Welcome to the forum.

A good habit is to start with a $1 pledge (Unless an early-bird is going fast) and then wait a few minutes, hours or until the next day to decide what reward tier to pick after some of the impulse buy state wears off. This helps avoid impulsively selecting a reward higher than one is going to be comfortable with. There can be stress when someone reduces their pledge level, so I recommend starting at the beginning of the rewards and gradually raising one's pledge up. Each time a pledge is raised up a level can also release some dopamine.

Most of the time I'll stay at the reward tier that first introduces the product that the project is about such as a copy of the game or the gadget. I prefer to make $10 pledges to ten different projects than a single $100 pledge. It helps distribute risk of project fulfilment failure while also being easier on my budget. If a game is really good but doesn't support Linux, I sometimes just leave a $1 pledge. I might also upgrade my pledge in the final hours if it is a very close call for reaching the minimum goal.

Great tip Lobster. I've been doing the $1 more lately and holding off on pledging more.

I know the feeling. I have too much stuff, but I see so many really cool things on Kickstarter and it is just too much fun to be a part of seeing something new launched. It's good to know others are as addicted as I am.

I give most of my stuff away. Makes great birthday, anniversary, holiday, and "just because" gifts. I also donate some stuff to local libraries, teachers, librarians.
