I've been hanging around in the crowdfunding world for about 4 years. When I first discovered Kicsktarter I loved the idea, but was amazed from a business perspective that it worked. When someone explained the idea to me that you could raise money to produce something by getting hundreds or thousands of people to pitch in small amounts in hopes of getting a pre-ordered item...I just couldn't believe that it actually worked. But, the more I got into it, the more I loved the idea. It really is a win-win situation for the backers and the creators.
After trying a few unsuccessful Kickstarter projects myself (https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/5toclose/created) I began to realize that crowdfunding isn't a magical process of putting an idea out there and watching the ends of the world flock to the project and support it. Just like any other sort of product launch, a successful crowdfunding project requires careful planning, pre-launch work and marketing skill. While it is a bit easier with a platform like Kickstarter where some people will find your project organically without any advertising, it is very rare that a project will be able to succeed from this momentum alone.
Over the years I ended up gravitating toward crowdfunding consulting and have served in a support or team lead role for a number of projects (recently: http://kck.st/V220Jr, http://kck.st/1qcYvwC, http://kck.st/YPm0Sf and several preparing to launch soon).
I am a busy family guy with a wonderful wife and 6 children (ages 8 to 1). I'm excited to see the community grow here in BackerClub. I see the Club being a huge win for both serious backers in terms of getting great discounts and perks but also forming a community for those who love crowdfunding as well as for creators who have a hard time getting great ideas in front of the right people before launching.
